Our Year In Review

2005 was a banner year for the West Virginia Insurance Federation (WVIF) and the insurance industry generally. The WVIF played a major role in the passage of significant legislation, leading to increased visibility of the WVIF and improved credibility of our member companies.

It is not an understatement to say the 2005 legislative session was the most groundbreaking for the insurance industry in West Virginia's history.

Two of the most important bills pertaining to insurance included the Joint and Several Liability bill and the repeal of Private Third Party Cases of Action. The collaborative efforts of the WVIF, the Governor, the Insurance Commissioner, the Legislature, and the business community led to the establishment of a more even playing field in West Virginia's courtrooms.

Our Value

We provide a myriad of services that bring value to our members. We sponsor the West Virginia Consumers for Fairness Grassroots Campaign. We regularly serve as a liaison between the Insurance Commissioner and our industry. In our role, we review and comment on proposed administrative rules affecting insurers.

Members receive regular e-mail updates on significant insurance developments. We coordinate members' participation in the filing of briefs amicus curie on significant issues considered by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. We meet annually with the Congressional delegation on federal issues. In addition to meeting with members of Congress, we develop a cohesive legislative agenda and strategy for each session. In regular, bi-monthly meetings, we discuss issues affecting member companies and the insurance industry.
